A Lotta of Pencils & Paper

Why do BOEs spend vast sums on legal fees. Shouldn't the 'Law of Supply and Demand' apply? Does every legal matter have to be handled by a Johnny Cochran priced lawyer ?
Why do they continually hire law firms at $250 per hour and up and then cry poverty when it comes to salary increases for teachers and staff?
Do you think politics might have something to do with it? Politics in education - Nah couldn't be!

What a Wonderful Wiz He is !

AND lest we forget:
(1)    $400M in Fed Ed aid that was lost (then he stuck it all on Schlinder)
(2)    $12M spend on unnecessary election (so he wouldn't be on the ballot with Booker)
(3)    doled out $10M as a parting gift to a Sandy aid relief distribution company (Hammerman & Gainer which was fired for poor performance)
(4)    Spent $7M for legal costs to his bud Mastro (the GWB problem and it’s still not over)
(5)    Lost $350M repayment to the Federal government when he reneged on the Arc Tunnel Project (lost the 3,000 construction jobs the tunnel was projected to generate for the next decade and also cost N.Y. and N.J. 44,000 jobs and $4 billion in additional income through economic growth, according to a 2008 study by New Jersey Transit)
(6)    Lost $7.7M for refusing to participate in the health care exchange program (and could have insured 95,000 additional uninsured New Jerseyans and would have cost the State nothing)

New Jersey Education Ain't That Good!

The New Jersey education system certainly has failed if 44% of the population still believes Christie is doing a good job!

During his administration:
*New Jersey’s credit rating has been reduced six times
*A $400M federal education grant was lost
*“The Governor” signs and promotes a law regarding pensions and then reneges on it a year later (then  he proclaims at a Town Hall Meeting – “A deal is a deal” – what BS!)
*An unnecessary election costing $24M was held for his political benefit
*The New Jersey unemployment rate has lagged the national average
*Millions of dollars of tax relief was given to corporations while no notable increase in jobs has occurred
*Sandy relief funds were mishandled by a 'good old boy' corporation selected by him
*The GWB debacle continues
*The shady handling of the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s situation has yet to be resolved
*“No new taxes” except for those who had their Homestead Rebate “postponed”!
*“The Governor” wormed his way into a Sandy ad spot (including his family) by paying the ad company an inflated price
*“The Governor’s” brother gets a cushy deal resulting from the renovation of the PATH station in Harrison.
*“The Governor” parcels out $3M (taxpayer money) for his lawyers to write him an excuse for the GWB  issue.
*And now he’s going on 14 “field trips” out of state attempting to become a presidential candidate!
God help us but I guess in a country that elected George Bush twice – anything is possible!
If “The Governor” was a teacher I think he would certainly be rated “ineffective” and that’s being kind!

PS I am sure that you can think of more screw-ups. Please feel free to contribute.

$140K per Hour and She'd be Underpaid !!

The cost of a college degree in the United States has increased "12 fold" over the past 30 years, far outpacing the price inflation of consumer goods, medical expenses and food.
According to Bloomberg, college tuition and fees have increased 1,120 percent since records began in 1978.
The average debt owed by New Jersey college graduates in 2012 was $29,287, according to the Project on Student Debt 2012. That’s up from an average of $27,610 in 2011 and $23,792 in 2010.
Most of New Jersey’s public colleges and universities do not pay their commencement speakers, though they often cover their travel expenses. Rutgers recently began paying speakers $30,000 to $35,000 in a bid to attract bigger names to its ceremony. The money comes from donations to the university’s foundation, not tuition or state funding, Rutgers officials said.*
Rice was scheduled to receive $35,000 for her Rutgers speech before she bowed out. (The speech was planned for 15 minutes - that's $140,000 per hour.) Kean, her replacement, has turned down the fee and Rutgers has not said if LeGrand will be paid for his remarks.
Kean University has also paid its speakers in recent years. Musician John Legend earned $25,000 in 2011 for a 15-minute speech and the performance of two songs. In 2006, Kean paid filmmaker Spike Lee $25,000 for a 10-minute graduation address (that's $150,000 per hour).
New Jersey colleges seem to want to give away over two years of tuition for a typical undergraduate student so as to have a "Big Name" commencement speaker? I think this shows the height of  arrogance and total disregard for the students who struggle to pay the exorbitant tuitions and fees these school demand.

*Should such donations be used to line the pockets of "Big Name" fifteen minute speakers? I certainly think it would be better used to help lower tuition costs if even just an iota! They say that university foundations pay the speaker fees?  Does that mean that when I get phone calls for contributions to Rutger's Foundations I  was being asked to contribute to this pompous folly.? I had no idea that might be the case!
Had I known I surely would not have contributed as I have done over the past fifteen years. The next time I am called I will be sure to ask if any of my money will be eligible for the "Big Name" speaker program? If  the answer is "yes" - I will just simply hang up the phone!

"Free Speech" - I Don't Think So!

"Her grandfather was a sharecropper" - my grandfather was in the Prussian Army -  "So what ??"

Ms. Rice is to be paid $35,000 plus expenses for this commencement address!
Does that sound like "free speech"?
And who is paying - RU students with tuition and fee costs that have risen almost 100% during the past decade (much paid with student loans).
Couldn't they find someone to give the address for free and award an honorary degree to that person as compensation?
How about Cory Booker?

Oh - wait a minute - I almost forgot!
He gave a commencement address at The College of New Jersey a year or two ago and charged $10,000 !
Well but at least he's cheaper -
Oh -wait a minute again - now that he's Senator Booker maybe he wouldn't be that cheap after all?
Maybe we could go with "The Governor"?
He's always talking about containing costs and saving taxpayer's money (unless it's being handed out to lawyers)!
I bet he would do it (if there was a free meal involved)!

"The Governor's" Silence is Golden - For Lawyers That is!!

"The Governor"  (as he likes to call himself) finds it easy to decry spending when it comes to the salaries, benefits and pensions of public employees.
But why have we heard no outcry from him regarding taxpayer spending on legal costs?
*(Please see the excerpt from the 2013 NJ Comptroller's Report below)
Why does he not propose a cap on the fees charged to the State by law firms?
His lack of comment on this issue speaks volumes about his hypocrisy!
